Are you using the right polyphenols at the right time?
Endurance sports is all about recovery. And what is better than copying what the pros do? Well, be careful. When you see Tadej Pogocar and his colleagues down a bottle of that dark red fluid (tart cherry juice), be aware of the ramifications. The polyphenols in this drink ensure you recover fast for the next stage tomorrow, but at the expense of more muscle cells. When you are in training, you need a different set of polyphenols, which you will find in early harvest olive oil. One of the best is EH1200.
A Tale of Two Recovery Rituals
Maya is an ultramarathoner who takes her recovery metrics very seriously. On her kitchen counter are two bottles: deep red, concentrated tart cherry juice, and an opaque bottle of EH1200, the premium, peppery, high-polyphenol extra virgin olive oil.
In the past, Maya thought both were just generic health foods meant to combat inflammation. It wasn't until she met Elena, a sports physiologist, that she learned she was using them all wrong.
Phase 1: The Base Building Season (The Olive Oil Protocol)
It was April, the peak of Maya’s base-training block. She was running 110 kilometers a week, intentionally breaking down muscle fibers so they would grow back stronger and packed with more mitochondria (cellular powerhouses).
Every afternoon after a brutal hill workout, Maya would reach for the tart cherry juice to stop the soreness. One day, Elena caught her. "Put the cherry juice down, Maya. You're killing your gains. Use the olive oil instead."
Maya was confused. "But tart cherry juice stops my muscle soreness!"
"Exactly," Elena explained. "It stops the soreness because it acts like a massive fire extinguisher. Training creates oxidative stress, which is a distress signal telling your DNA to build more muscle. If you dump a massive dose of fast-acting, water-soluble antioxidants like tart cherry juice into your system immediately after training, you extinguish the fire before your body can adapt. You feel less sore, but your fitness stagnates."
"High-polyphenol olive oil works differently," Elena continued. "Its main polyphenol, oleocanthal, acts as a natural, mild anti-inflammatory that modulates chronic stress without aggressively wiping out the acute training signals your muscles need. Other polyphenols like hydroxytyrosol promote angiogenesis—the creation of new micro-arteries. A denser network of capillaries means more oxygen delivered to your working muscles. Plus, because olive oil improves overall vascular health and microcirculation, it helps vital nutrients actually reach your joints and cartilage, which normally have a notoriously poor blood supply and take a beating during heavy training. During training, we want this slow, structural, and sustained support, not a hard chemical shutoff. Take 20 - 40 ml 4 hours before or after training."
Phase 2: Race Week (The Tart Cherry Takeover)
Fast forward to October. The months of training are over. Maya iss standing at the starting line of her 80-kilometer race. Her muscles are as adapted as they are going to get. Now, with the race starting, only pure performance and rapid recovery count. Maya crushes the race, crossing the finish line in a personal best. But an ultramarathon leaves the body in a state of absolute trauma—muscles are damaged, systemic inflammation is through the roof, and the body's internal systems are severely stressed.
Maya does not reach for olive oil. She downs 250 milliliters of tart cherry juice concentrate, followed by another dose the next morning. Because her goal is no longer trying to force her body to adapt, the cherry juice does exactly what it is born to do:
-
Blunt the massive inflammatory cascade that causes severe delayed-onset muscle soreness (DOMS);
-
Reduced lipid peroxidation (damage to the fats in cell walls);
-
Provided a natural dose of melatonin to help her central nervous system calm down so she can sleep.
The Takeaway
Maya now understands the golden rule of endurance nutrition. Use EH1200 polyphenol-rich olive oil throughout the year to build mitochondria and better arteries, for more performance, faster recovery and fewer injuries. But when it is racing time, use the tart cherry juice to recover immediately.
